BAN PLACED ON BUTTER
Auckland Union Members’ Action
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 10.
In spite of instructions from the Federation of Labour and from the local union secretary (Mr R. McKenzie), Freezing Workers’ Union members at the King’s Wharf cool store refused to load out butter today.
The refusal was made under the former decision of the federation to ban the movement of export animal products. The refusal means that the Shaw Savill vessel Athenic will sail from Auckland tomorrow evening for Britain 3000 561 b cartons of butter short of her quota.
The cool stores are controlled by the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company. The men were sent home at 3 p.m. McKenzie, who arrived back from Wellington late tonight, said he did not know the full position. He had called off the ban on butter before leaving for Wellington for talks with the federation executive this morning. He sad he thought the men would not return to work tomorrow unless the complete ban on animal products was lifted.
The Athenic will also leave behind about 500 tons of meat
