MISSED AIRCRAFT TO AUSTRALIA
Passengers Flown To Wrong Airport
Twenty-four passengers for Australia assembled in Wellington yesterday to be flown to Christchurch to connect with a T.E.A.L. Electra for Melbourne. Instead, they were taken to Auckland, while the Electra arrived at Harewood and left on schedule. The mistake occurred because Harewood was operating under marginal conditions, and It was thought that the Electra would have to be diverted to Whenuapai.
N.A.C. flew the Wellington passengers to Auckland after consultation with T.E.A.L. They spent last night in Auckland hotels, and will fly to Sydney today to catch a connecting plane for Melbourne. The Electra from Australia for
Christchurch flew in about an hour after Harewood had been opened in the' afternoon. When it left again an hour later with 35 passengers it disappeared into overcast only 100 ft off the runway—2o minutes before the field was again declared marginal, and finally closed for all operations.
