Table Tennis BULLER TITLES

J. Armstrong Wins Men’s Event

(From Our (ton Reporter) WESTPORT, June 5. The present South Island champion, J. Armstrong (Canterbury), was the dominant player in the Buller table tennis championships at Westport. Armstrong won three titles in the senior section.

Canterbury players dominated the men’s events, while players from Nelson and Buller were to the fore in the women’s section. Armstrong beat another Canterbury player, N. B. Radford, In the final of the men's singles. A high standard of play was showm, but Radford was unable to capitalise on leads of 12-9 in the first game and 7-3 in the second. Miss A. Eden (Nelson) won the women’s singles final from Miss Lindsey Butts (Buller) in a semifinal Miss Butts had eliminated the top seed Miss J. Sara (Nelson) in a match which featured very strong forehand driving and good footwork from both players. Results were:— Men's singles.—Quarter-finals: J. Armstrong beat R. Kawharu, 21-6, 21-8, 21-2; D. D. M. Stewart beat P. Wood. 21-17, 21-10, 21-9; D. V. Fisher beat A. Ward, 21-17, 21-9, 21-10; N. B. Radford beat J. Douglas. 21-11, 21-16, 21-13. Semi-finals: Armstrong beat Stewart. 21-10, 21-15, 21-6; Radford beat Fisher, 21-19, 21-14, 21-14. Final: Armstrong beat Radford, 21-14, 2112. 21-8.

Women’s Singles.—Semi-finals: Miss Lindsey Butts beat Miss J. Sara, 23-21, 21-18, 15-21, 17-21, 21-17; Miss A. Eden beat Miss R. Kinsey. 21-9, 21-7, 21-12. Final: Miss Eden beat Miss Lindsey Butts, 21-15, 1121, 21-13, 21-10. Men's Doubles.—Final: J. Armstrong and D. V. Fisher beat D. D. M. Stewart and N. B. Radford, 1921, 21-13. 21-19. 21-18. Women's Doubles.—Final: Misses Lindsey Butts and J. Sara beat Misses A. Eden and A. Potts, 21-17, 13-21, 21-15, 17-21, 22-20. Mixed Doubles.—Final: J. Armstrong and Miss Lindsey Butts beat R. Kawharu and Miss J. Sara. 2117. 21-14, 21-19. Other winners were:—Boys’ singles: P. Wood. Boys’ doubles: P. Wood and W. Taylor. Girls’ singles: Miss Lorraine Butts. Girls' doubles: Misses Lorraine and Alison Butts. Junior mixed doubles: P. Wood and Miss Lorraine Butts. Men's plate: J. Taylor. Women’s bracelet: Miss J. Barrett.
