V.N. Conference Opinion (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 7. i A United Nations conference on criminal law has agreed that wire-tapping should be carried out only where Ministerial approval has been given for the specific case. The conference was held In Tokyo. The Assistant-Secretary of Justice (Mr J. I* Robson)’ and the Solicitor-General (Mr H, R. D. Wild), who attended for New Zealand, returned to Wellington last week. ; “Wire-tapping was discussed with the citizens’ other rights to privacy.” they said "today. “Although the conference does not pass resolutions, it was agreed that wire-tapping is an odious business and should be used only where the authority of a Minister responsible to Parliament had been given for the specific case.” Representatives agreed that capital punishment should be ultimately abolished. The first step was a reduction: in the range of crimes to which' the death penalty applied. This should be followed by a gradual approach to abolition.
Delegates at the conference include ministers, judges, law officers, and senior public service officials from Asian and South Pacific countries. The conference was convened by the Human Rights Division of the United Nations Organisation.
