Mr Nash’s Tour
Sir, —The cable news from Washington tells us that after an hour's conference with President Eisenhower the New Zealand Prime Minister (Mr Nash) said: “I came away more fully informed with regard to the President’s mind. In general I have been helped very much indeed by enjoying his time for an hour.” Later, in the cabled item, Mr Nash is reported to have said: “He (Mr Eisenhower) has probably got as high an integrity as you would find in any Prime Minister or President.” Sir, if I was an American citizen I would be (and I think rightly) quite annoyed with the use of the qualifying words “probably got.” On this world tour the Prime Minister has been kept more than busy explaining what he meant to say in one place when he arrived at another. One can only hope that this latest faux pas was due to ignorance and not to . . . —Yours, etc., < SHEER EFFRONTRY. June 5, 1960.
