SOCCER Canterbury Beaten In Gordon Cup Match

In a good exhibition of constructive soccer at English Park yesterday Wellington beat Canterbury by 1 goal to 0. The strength of both teams lay with the half-backs, who gave a rare display of cover defence, with H. Taylor (Canterbury), P. Rennell (Canterbury) and J. Warrender (Wellington) outstanding.

P. L. Whiting, the Wellington goalkeeper, thrilled the crowd with many great saves and his clearances and use of the throw when clearing were faultless.

The Wellington full-backs, A. Juner and K. Williams, were reliable and matched both the Canterbury wings in guile and speed. Warrender, the Wellington right half, led his half-backs, R. Leonard and S. Foye, astutely, and was calm and clever in breaking up many onslaughts by the opposing forwards.

Of the two visiting wings, T. McCabe was the most outstanding. His ball control and combination with the inside forwards, A. Inglis, A. Schryvers and W. Lisk, were first-class. Lisk engineered many of the Wellington attacks with clever control and accurate passes.

I. Hunter, the Canterbury goalkeeper, although lacking the agility of his counterpart, was safe when called on. T. Lynch, in his first representative appearance for Canterbury, produced his best game of the season. With I. Graham, at right back, they proved a formidable defence. Taylor, D. Simmonds and Rennell defended in a manner befitting a representative team, and combined well with the forwards, as well as being reliable in clearances whenever under pressure.

D. Worthington was a sound winger for Canterbury, but lacked the pace to capitalise on the through pass to any marked degree. H. Sue, on the right wing, played a mixed game, his combination with the inside men being good, but he lacked the power to send the high ball across the goal mouth. E. Bennett and T. Haydon were worthy inside forwards, Haydon in particular being a potential goal-scorer whenever in possession within range. A. Verham, playing as centre forward for the first time, was given very little room to move, and failed to produce his best. Wellington Attacks Wellington moved into the Canterbury half from the kick off and tested the defence with many clever movements and interchanges of play. Canterbury conceded two corners before they settled down.

Trying the short passing corner kick cost Canterbury possession on two occasions. A fine movement by McCabe and Schryvers midway through the first half nearly brought a goal. Only' brilliant cover defence by Rennell forced Schryvers into error with his shot. Haydon soon retaliated for Canterbury

with a long, powerful drive from well outside the penalty area. Goalkeeper Whiting proved equal to the occasion and saved with a lovely dive. With the first half scoreless, both teams opened the second spell striving for the advantage. Promising movements by both forward lines broke down only because of excellent defence. R. Reid, who replaced Schryvers at half-time, showed himself to be a grand player, giving the local team’s defence many anxious moments. The Only Goal

The only goal of the match was scored five minutes before the final whistle. Lisk received a through pass and shot at goal from 15 yards outside the penalty area, and found Hunter unable to stop the ball going into the top corner of the net. In the closing stages of the game. Canterbury attacked repeatedly but the Wellington defence held out to make the final score

Wellington 1, Canterbury 0. The referee was Mr H. Royce,
