North Beats South By Six Points (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. June 6 Although the North Island’s 20 shooters dripped 45 points—29 more than last year—they beat the South Island by six points when the annual inter-island smallbore rifle shooting match for the Ross Shield was fired at Petone on Saturday. The shooting was not of a high standard. Only eight possibles, four from each team, were recorded, compared with last year’i record of 19. The North Island's score was 7955.74. and the South Island’* 7949.635. One of the North Island's three women competitors, Mrs A. Lynch (Hutt Valley), who was contesting her first inter-island fixture, recorded four possibles, finishing only six inner bulls behind the individual champion. A. Chttrcher (Wanganui). Churcher had the highest aggregate. 400.38 and so won the B.S.A. Shield. His team mate, C. Hooper, who won the shield last year with a record score of 400.4, dropped one point over his four cards on Saturday. Other notable perfoimances came from F. D Mackie (South), 400.37; E. F. Grafton '(South), 40054; and N. W. France (North), 40053, alt newcomers in North-South shooting. ~
