Wider Range Needed
How can New Zealand widen its range of exports? What type of manufactured or semi-manu-factured goods are most suitable for New Zealand to produce for export? How can the number of exnort markets be increased? These are some of the quesMons which, In the view of the Department of Industries and Commerce, might be considered by the conference on industrial development, to be held In Wellington.
Tn a background paper prepared for the conference, the department reviews trends In New Zealand's exports Steadily Increasing export earnings are essential to the industrial development of New Zealand Present export earnings are unstable and therefore the expansion of exports to present markets Is unlikely to increase export earnings sufficiently to maintain the present standards of living “A wider range of exports and markets would make the New Zealand economy less vulnerable to marketing insecurities," the department says.
