Cricket CONTROVERSIAL BOWLERS
Trouble Forecast For Indies Tour
(N.Z Press Association— Copyright) LONDON, June 5.
The controversy over fast bowlers who throw in international cricket seems certain to flare up in the series between Australia and the West Indies later in the year, according to the “Sunday ' Dispatch's” cricket writer.
He said West Indies now has called upon its “problem bowler,” R. Gilchrist, a professional in the Lancashire League, “and that will make it the most dynamic series for fast bowling, including the bodyline tour of 1932-33.”
The West Indies board had originally decided not to consider Gilchrist, who had been sent home early from a tour of India and had been concerned in a number of Lancashire League incidents.
Now the all-rounder, E. Atkinson had. withdrawn, and Gilchrist, who had had a letter from the captain, F. M. Worrell, telling him not to give up hope, would probably be picked if he avoids further incidents.
A good conduct report whenflff! plays for Bacup in the League needle match against Accrington, would help Gilchrist to Australia, said the newspaper “Then with Gilchrist, W. Hall and C. Watson on one side, and I. Meckiff, G. Rorke and A. K. Davidson on the other, and the heat on, the whole future conduct of international cricket will be determined,” it said. “England's batsmen believe that Watson's action is as suspect as Meckiff’s, and Gilchrist throws his bouncer—which he is ready to produce. England must have an official observer present,” the writer said.
“The occasion is important enough for Mr Cricket himself— Gubby Allen—to be in attendance," said the “Sunday Dispatch.”
“If Australia does not send specially to the summit meeting of the Imperial Cricket Conference next month, M.C.C. should be prepared to take cricket’s current problems for discussion >ut there.
“Allen, a famous fast bowler and captain, born in Australia, and now, with Bradman, one of the two most important men in world cricket administration—is the ideal choice,” it said.
