Arthur’s Pass Excursion

‘‘Peacable journeys without any of last year’s rowdy elements.” was how .police officers described the season’s first excursion to Arthur’s Pass National Park yesterday. The two trains carried about 950 passengers. There were the usual guitarplaying, shoe-shuffling groups who, as constables made their regular checks up and down the trains, handed out customary wisecracks and indulged in a little horseplay. One window was accidentally broken on the' earlier train that returned at 7.45 p.m. On the second, about three bottles of beer were seized and little if any trouble was evident during the three and a half hour journey At the Pass, the weather was clear and windy with snow only at a high level on the mountains. There was no rain.

Most of the persons taking advantage of the outing were in the 15 to 20 age group, but there was a sprinkling of adults.
