Union Talks Today On Freezing Works Issue
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 6. The national executive of the Federation of Labour, and representatives of the freezing workers, watersiders, railwaymen, and drivers will meet in Wellington tomorrow morning to consider action to be taken in the present dispute in the freezing industry. The freezing companies have offered to backdate the partial settlement agreed on in conciliation 10 days ago—mainly the incorporation of the 24 per cent, general wage order in basic rates—to May 1. This is the date the Arbitration Court decided recently on which a new award should begin. The employers want the settlement to provide a June 30, 1961, expiry’ date for the new award.
The workers want pay to be retrospective to February 8, the date on which the dispute about incorporation first went to the Court.
The unions claimed they had such an understanding with the companies but the employers reject this, saying the understanding was for retrospective pay only if the Court granted a change in the award. The Court merely shortened the date of the expiry of the award by two months, and the actual incorporation was decided on only in conciliation.
The employers are prepared to let Mr S. W. Armstrong, the Conciliation Commissioner, who presided at last week’s compulsory conference, decide a compromise
date, provided the workers agree to signing the amended partial settlement and forthwith allow the documents to be lodged with the Clerk of Awards. This would mean that claims by the employers rejected in conciliation by the workers could go to the Court for hearing. There is no indication that the workers’ representatives will accept the employers’ offer. The delegates meeting with the executive of the Federation of Labour represent unions which would be involved if the offer is rejected and the freezing workers decide to continue with their plans for a “no-load-out” ban on carcases.
