GUEST HOUSES “BUGGED”

U.S. Discovery In Russia (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) WASHINGTON, June 5. The Soviet Union planted a “bug” listening device in the United States Embassy residence in Moscow shortly before the American Vice-President (Mr Richard Nixon) visited the Soviet Union last summer, but it was discovered and removed before Mr Nixon arrived, it was learned reliably today, United Press International reported. The agency’s sources also said there were hidden listening devices in all of the Soviet guest houses where Mr Nixon stayed on his tour through the Soviet Union, including Mr Khrushchev’s dacha, some 25 miles down the Moscow river from the Soviet capital. U.P.I. said the guest houses—in Leningrad, Novosibrisk, and Sverdlovsk (near where the American U2 spy plane was brought down)—were used by visiting dignitaries of other countries as well as Soviet officials who went there to rest. This suggested the Russians listened in on their own people.
