Ploughing Match Round Begins Next Week
QUALIFYING events for the New Zealand ploughing championship will begin in the South Island in Nelson and West Otago next Saturday. Sixteen of
the 22 qualifying events are in the South Island and the final will be held oh July 30 at Washdyke, near Timaru. In Italy This year’s winner of the national title and the Atlantic silver plough will go to Rome to compete in the world championship on October 9 and 10. He will plough against 38 other ploughmen from 18 other countries. The world match site is on a property owned by an agricultural company Tor Mancina—only 15 miles from Rome, and not far from the Tiber river. The company is owned by the Technical Experimental Institute of Rome which was founded in 1926 for research on the genetic improvement of domestic animals and the alimentation of cattle. It is controlled by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. Cattle Run Of about 2500 acres it includes several hills and is well stocked with cattle. The company has at its disposal a laboratory for chemical and biological research and on the property there is also a modern dairy and a wide range of mechanical equipment. The ploughing area also includes part of the agricultural company of the Conti Lucangeli, which specialises in pedigree cattle. A visit to the Vatican and a Papal audience has been arranged for the visiting ploughmen.
As at other world matches a cairn of peace will be unveiled. The cairn is built of local stone into which a piece of stone from each of the countries competing is set. A small piece of Hanmer marble is in Rome awaiting incorporation in the cairn.
