INDECENT ASSAULT
Three Years’ Gaol For Napier Man
(New Zealand Press Association) NAPIER, June 3.
“My client particularly instructed me to say that he is innocent," the acting counsel f<?r the defence (Mr A. K. Monagan) told Mr Justice McCarthy in the Supreme Court, Napier, yesterday. Mr Monagan was making final submissions before sentence was passed on Richard David Wolfe, a 31-year-old Napier fireman, who was convicted by a jury on Tuesday on eight counts of indecent assault. His Honour sentenced Wolfe to three years' imprisonment. During the two-day trial, evidence was given that Wolfe, a former scoutmaster, used a form o’ hynosis on youths and then committed indecent acts. Counsel suggested that since Wolfe's child was born the prisoner had reformed. The last of the alleged offences had taken place a year ago. The prisoner had used his position as a scoutmaster, and it was “tragic” that such a great injury should be caused to scouting, Mid his Honour. “The Court must show a stern face to this,” he added.
