CEREMONY AT WIGRAM

Royal Salute And Presentation

Queen’s Birthday observances had an early start yesterday with a parade at the Royal New Zealand Air Force station, Wigram, in the afternoon.

The station commander, Group Captain S. G. Quill, reviewed the parade and reminded the 600 men and women on the ground that the occasion was significant and a suitable one at which servicemen should reaffirm their oath of allegiance to the Crown. A Royal Standard was broken at the masthead for a few minutes, the Queen was cheered by all ranks, and the standard was hauled down to the accompaniment of a Royal Salute with musical honours.

Four men were presented with long service and good conduct medals.

They were Flight Sergeants A. R. Mitchell and M. E. Rees, Sergeant G. V. Rule and Leading Aircraftman J. G. N. Ryder.

The maroon and blue ribbons with white edging they will wear on their tunics denote 18 years’ exemplary service.

Group Captain Quill made the awards ar,d congratulated each man individually. The parade commander was Wing Commander L. H. Edwards, officer in charge of administration at Wigram.
