New Queen Liner?
LONDON, June 1. A committee set up by the British Government to advise on the best way to replace Cunard’s two giant Queen liners today recommended that a 75.000-ton ship carrying 2270 passengers should replace the Queen Mary. The Chandos committee report, summarised in the House of Commons, suggested that the Government should provide a loan not exceeding £lB million at 4J per cent, interest towards a liner costing not more than £3O million. It would be owned and operated by Cunard through a separate company to which Cunard would subscribe £l2 million as equity capital. The 81.237-ton Queen Mary made her maiden voyage in 1936 while the Queen Elizabeth, of 83,679 tons, was launched in 1938. completed early in the war, and made her first civilian crossing in 1946.
