Transport Licence Granted For Contract Coal Delivery
The public interest would be served by being supplied with fuel during the winter without undue delay, said the No. 9 Transport Licensing Authority (Mr J. S. Haywood) yesterday granting an application by Edward Arthur Spence for a continuous goods service licence to carry coal, coke and firewood on contract for G. McClatchie and Company, Ltd. The general manager of McClatchie and Company, Ltd. (Mr G. G. MitchelD said his firm always had difficulty in finding and retaining drivers for their trucks and often during the winter orders would get three weeks behind because of the shortage of drivers. Replying to a question by Mr B. G. Dingwall, who had objected to the application on behalf of the Christchurch Suburban Carriers’ Association, Mr Mitchell said carriers did not seem interested in carrying coal because it made their trucks dirty and also the carriers could not guarantee a continuous service.
An application by Kokil Patel, trading as Patel’s Motor Garage, for an amendment to his rental vehicle licence by the addition of two cars, one van and a flat-deck truck was approved with the proviso that the truck should not carry a pay load in excess of five tons.
Patel’s business in Hornby had grown with the area, said Mr J. A. Bretherton, who appeared for Patel, and the increase in his fleet of vehicles would serve a public demand. The Christchurch Suburban Carriers’ Association (Mr B. G. Dingwall) opposed the application. Extension Granted
Bruce Bolton Woods, cartage contractor, was granted an extension to his vehicle authority to allow him to carry builders’ materials (excluding joinery) in conjunction with other authorised materials. His application for an exemption from the 30-mile rail restriction was refused after the Railways Department (Mr L. C. Brown) objected.
The department was opposed to such exemptions from the restrictions unless it could be shown to be in the public’s interest, said Mr Brown.
Woods admitted in evidence he had little work outside Christchurch in the previous 12 months. Mr B. G. Dingwall opposed Woods’s application on behalf of the Christchurch Suburban Carriers’ Association.
Unique Service This would be a unique service in Canterbury, said Mr Haywood in granting an application by Gordon Howard Oldham (Mr E. B. E. Taylor) for a new rental vehicle licence to operate two four-wheel-drive utility vehicles.
The vehicles would be used to transport fishermen, skiers, shooters and tourists into the back country, said Mr Taylor. Supporting evidence for the scheme was given by Mr A. R. Guthrey, who said the service
would be in the public interest and would provide a service for the growing tourist trade in the country.
The Empire Express Company, Ltd (Mr J. A. Bretherton), was granted an amendment to its continuous goods service licence to allow the addition of an extra vehicle.
The increase in the company’s business made the need for an extra vehicle essential, said Mr Bretherton.
An application for the transfer of rental licence from Robert Alexander Galletly, Leeston, to Baylis Motors, Ltd., was granted. Mr W. G. P. Cuningham, who appeared for Baylis Motors, Ltd., also applied for a transfer of a continuous taxi service licence from Galletly to Baylis Brothers (Leeston), Ltd., and asked for the terms of the licence to be altered from public to private hire. The change from public to private hire would not result in a diminution ’of service to the public, said Mr Cuningham. The transfer was approved by the Authority. An application by Arthur Alfred Debenham, general contractor, for a continuous goods licence for one vehicle to carry gravel, shingle, sand, soil or spoil was granted subject to materials only needed for his contracting jobs being carried. In support of his application, he said a truck was necessary for the business as he could not rely on carriers to be available when required. Objections to the application were entered by Mr H. W. Hunter (Transport Alliance) and Mr B. G. Dingwall (Christchurch Suburban Carriers’ Association).
