APPEALS ON ZONING

Inner Area Objections

Newspaper offices were traditionally in the heart of a city although some had teen forced to move through being unable to acquire land for extension, the Christchurch City Council’s special committee hearing objections to the council's town planning scheme was told yesterday. Mr W. P. Glue (chairman), Mr G. A. G. Connal and Mr G. D. Hattaway form the committee.

The committee was hearing an objection by the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd., Cathedral Square and Gloucester street, to zoning as commercial C and requesting such zoning as would cover the present use as a predominant one. Alfred James Sandom, manager of the company, said the newspaper had conducted its business for nearly 100 years from sites in the heart of Christchurch. “The reason for this is that it is closely associated with the heart of the community it serves; it has many callers all day and a good part of the night who find its situation most convenient.”

He said newspaper offices were traditionally in the heart of a city. Fleet street was a continuation of London’s Strand, Times square probably qualified as the heart of New York, and Melbourne newspaper offices were in the heart of Melbourne.

The company’s main buildings were dignified, well maintained and sound and their life with proper maintenance was indeterminate, he added. . .
