Lyttelton Branch Meets
The club had continued to make itself known to all visiting seafarers by the regular visits of the superintendent (Mr F. Thompson) and chaplains to the ships, said the report presented to the fortyeighth annual meeting of the Lyttelton branch of the British Sailors’ Society. The meeting was held at the King George V Seamen’s Institute, Mr Wallace C. Keetley, presiding. The number of seamen visiting the club for the year was 11,491 and 628 visits to ships were made by the superintendent and chaplains. Forty-nine dances and 24 film evenings were held, and 3143 books and magazines were issued to ships. In the first complete year in which services had been held in St. Nicholas’ Chapel, one in every 12 seamen in the club on Sunday evenings attended the services. Officers elected were:—Board of directors president, the Rev. Canon R. J. Witty; vice-presi-dents, Messrs T. F. M. Gibson and E. Fraser; honorary vicepresidents, the Kt. Rev. the Bishop of Christchurch, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church, and the district chairman of the Methodist Church; secretary, Miss J. R. Sneddon; treasurer, Miss W. M. Hatchwell; life members, Lady Acland, Mrs J. Russell Wells, Misses B. L. Sanders and W. M. Hatchwell, Messrs Wallace E. Keatley and A. K. Dyne; directors, the Rev. B. O. Richards, the Rev. R. S. Andrews, the Rev. D. K. Boyd, Commander J. C. Elworthy, Captain A. R. Champion, Captain R. S. Webster, Messrs P. J. Byrne. G. F. Phillips, and H. L. Herdman, Mesdames G. Hennessy, D. E. Hansen, W. Keetley, and M. Whitfield, and Miss A. A. Wilson.
