WORKS STILL IDLE
No Settlement At Rurnside
(New Zealand Press Association)
DUNEDIN, June 1. Sheep slaughtermen at the Burnside freezing works are still idle. More staff is to be paid off tomorrow and the union is expected to hold a meeting tomorrow morning to discuss the matter. A meeting of the union was also held this afternon, but it was announced afterwards that there was “nothing to report” Negotiations have not been entered into between the employers, the New Zealand Refrigerating Company—and the employees. “We are quite definite in what we want and they are quite definite about what they want” Mr K. Clark, the works manager, said tonight. Mr Clark would not comment when asked if he held hopes for work resuming within the next day or so. Nor would he comment on the kill lost as a result of the strike.
The slaughtermen struck last Thursday. They disagreed with the management on the inclusion of one particular name among the employees to be paid off at that stage.
