FIVE-HOUR DELAY FOR FERRY

Fog In Auckland Harbour (Tiew Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, May 31. Thick fog marooned the passenger ferry Motunui at Waiheke Island this morning, and half of her original 93 passengers were playing cards and drinking free tea at 11.30 a.m., five hours after she was due to leave on her 14-mile journey run to Auckland. She finally got away at 11.50 a.m. The Motunui made one unsuccessful bid to make the trip at 10.30 a.m. when the fog began to lift. The ferry got under way, but returned to the wharf when the fog came down as thickly as ever.

The mussel boat, Roa, bound for Coromandel from Auckland, reported late in the morning that she was fog-bound between Browns Island and Motuihe. She got under way about the same time as the Motunui.

Whenuapai airport traffic was disrupted for several hours by the fog, which lifted there shortly before 10 am.
