Coal
Sir, —May I also complain about the quality of coal we get today, a sore point with consumers for a long time? All you get from the merchant is, “The coal is screened at the mines, now.” It is hard to believe much of it has been near a screen. I sifted l&lb of coal with a flour sieve from the pantry, getting 2oz of coal dust, which works out at 401 b of dust a quarter-ton. With a 3-Bin mesh riddle I screened 101 b of coal, getting 41b of dross, making 2cwt to the quarter-ton, leaving consumers (including pensioners) 3cwt of good coal out of scwt, for which we have to pay £2 2s 10d.—Yours, etc., PENSIONER.
