BANANA SUPPLIES
Predicted Shortage For
Some Months
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 31.
The supply of bananas coming to New Zealand from the Pacific Islands was not equal to the demand and a further decrease was expected before full supplies to cope with the market came forward in a few months, the general manager of Fruit Distributors, Ltd. (Mr C. Rj Walker) said today. During the last two or three years, he said, bananas had been in adequate supply, most coming from Western Samoa where production over the last two years had been phenomenal. Unfortunately in January and March Western Samoa received the full force of heavy gales and as a result of damage to plants the supply had decreased considerably. It would be some months before the supply level of the last two years would be attained. The Tofua’s next shipment was due in Auckland on June 6.
