“Tht Press’ Special Service
DUNEDIN, May 31
Chief General, Irrepressible. Blooming and Promise were the most impressive trialists in a quiet morning’s work at Wingatui this morning. There were no outstanding gallops in the semifinal trials for the opening of the Dunedin Jockey Club's winter meeting on Saturday.
Conditions were ideal. The tracks in use were the plough and the inside grass. The course proper has not been in such good condition at this time of the jear for a long time.
If the good spell of weather continues the track will be in first-class order on Saturday. For the benefit of visiting horses the steeplechase fences on the course proper will be available on Thursday. Chief General (J. R. Dowling! galloped on the grass and was travelling well within himself to cover the opening furlong in 13sec and complete half a mile in 53sec. The Callander four-year-old has done well since he raced at Invercargill, where he was an unlucky second in the hack mile. He will be one of the best-supported runners in the Brighton Handicap, the first leg of the on-course double on Saturday. These times were equalled by Ops (R. N. Marsh), which galloped on her own. and Hawkesberry (R. N. Marsh) and Andalusia (P. D. Pankhurst).
Ops has not raced since the Canterbury Easter meeting. She looks well forward to resume in the Brighton Handicap. Pot Luck (B. P. Kennedy) and Ben Ledi (N. A. Dempsey) were not out for time over the same ground in 55sec. Ada’s Luck (J. D. Pankhurst) and Golden Miller (J. Wells) were responsible for the fastest trial on this track, running five furlongs in Imin 5 3-ssec. the first two furlongs in 25 3-ssec. Easy Gallop
Matlock (R. J. Skelton), the Riverton Cup winner, which will revert to sprinting in the Winter Handicap, was given an easy gallop in Imin Bsec, the first two furlongs In 25 3-ssec.
Peril (R. Marsh) completed a round of pacework by coming home the last three furlongs in 40sec. Promise (B. J. Anderton) jumped two hurdles and then ran an evenly timed six furlongs in Imin 21 4-ssec. the first three furlongs in 41 2-ssec. A close third in the Birthday Handicap last year. Promise is a form runner in this year's event.
Blooming (F. Henneberry) beat her
stablemates. Irrepressible and Fire Bar (J. R. Dowling) by length margins over five furlongs on the plough in Imin 7 2-ssec. the opening two furlongs in 25 3-ssec. L. W. Hare din not ride Irrepressible out and she appeared to be galloping easily.
Cornflake (J. R. Dowling) should benefit from his gallop in Imin 7 l-ssec, the last three furlongs in 41 l-ssec. A last-start winner at Nelson, the veteran galloper is topweight in the Winter Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Royaloil (R. J. Skelton) was galloping well alongside Listen <N. A. Dempsey) and Murray Moon (G Foster) over the same ground in Imin 8 2-ssec. Die first two furlongs in 26sec. One of the best efforts on this track was that of Mary Dee (G. Foster) which sped over six furlongs in Imin 1!) 4-ssec, the first three furlongs in 39sec., Kumai (H. T. Anderton) came home over the last three furlongs in 41sec.
Cashmere Shows Promise Cashmere, which is due to make his debut as a jumper in the Greenfield Haok Hurdles on Saturday, showed great promise in his new role when he schooled this morning. Ridden by A. McKay, the Cassock gelding made a bold showing, leading his more experienced stablemate. Master Ascot, over 'most of the six flights of hurdles. It was at the last fence that Cashmere made his only obvious mistake in the fast school. He put in a big jump and hit it hard, but this did not alter his stride and he completed his task well. Master Ascot is a last-start winner as a jumper, taking the Peerswick Hurdles at the Canterbury Easter meeting. Cashmere has won open handicaps at Wingatui and at Riccarton and one of his most recent placings was his fourth in the Hutt Handicap at Trentham in March. On the strength of his form on the flat and his apparent relish of his new role it should not take long for him to make the grade as a jumper. Paper Clip (B. J. Anderton) led over the last jump, but Mighty Robin (G. E. Lowry) shaded his companion at most of the nurdles in a smart run over five flights. Courteous (B. N. Blair), which will have his first race as a jumper in the Greenfield Hurdles, showed promise whep he led Greeneille (T McCutcheon) over a round of hurdles.
No Offence (B. P. Kennedy) led Meridian (R. O. Cairns) over, the sod wall and double brush and Sydtrev (B. P. Kennedy) led Mananui (A. McKay) over the same fences.
