YOUTH HOSTEL AT AKAROA

Memorial For Late President

The new youth hostel proposed for Akaroa will be called the “Sheila Crawford Memorial Youth Hostel” in memory of the late president of the North Canterbury branch of the . Youth Hostels’ Association, Dr. Sheila Crawford, who died recently on a trip in the Far East. This was confirmed at the last committee meeting of the branch, when it was reported that the hostel site would be inspected on June 12 by members of the general committee and of the recently-formed special finance committee.

The membership of the branch during the seven months ending May 30 was 731, it was reported. Bed nights recorded during the same period were more than 1200. Maintenance work had been carried out on three hostels and at Arthur’s Pass the common room and kitchen of the hostel had been repainted. Extra bunkrooms had been constructed.
