DISPUTE AT BURNSIDE
More Staff To Be Paid Off
(Neu) Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 31. More staff of the New Zealand Refrigerating Company’s works at Burnside would be paid off on Thursday, the manager at Burnside (Mr K. Clark) said tonight.
The management confirmed this decision, he said, after a works meeting of the Freezing Workers’ Union today decided that the striking sheep slaughtermen would not resume killing. The strike began last Thursday when the union disagreed with the management over the inclusion of one particular name on lists of employees who were to be paid off at that stage. The company announced that unless the slaughtermen resumed killing today under its conditions further staff reductions would be made.
The rest of the departments are working normally. The works, in full operation, consist of three and a half mutton chains. Last week’s staff reductions reduced these to two chains, and it is believed that the announced reductions to take effect from Thursday will leave only one chain.
