A search began in the Tasman today for the 54ft ketch, Tahi Waitangi, which sent distress calls late yesterday. Four Sydney men are on board. The skipper is Mr P. H. London, of Sydney. The Commonwealth Navigation Department in Sydney received the S.O.S. call and this was relayed to the Newcastle harbourmaster, who arranged for the police launch Ansett and the freighter 'KSurue to - begin the search. The Ansett put back to port when radar pinpointed the signal at 55 miles off the New South Wales coast., - :
The yacht is already a day overdue. It left New Zealand four week? ago yesterday and has been in radio contact with Sydney since Thursday. Yesterday, Mr London told the Sydney Overseas Teleommunications Centre that the yacht had ridden out a southerly gale and was moving towards Sydney. He said fuel for the yacht’s diesel engine was running short.
