ORGANISATION OF SEARCHES
Practice In South Canterbury
(New Zealand Press Association) TIMARU, May 15. Although hampered by rain and heavy fog, the first full-scale rehearsal by South Canterbury’s new search and rescue organisation, held at Silverhill Station, in the Tengawai district, near Albury, today went off smoothly. About 30 key men representing the South Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association. Emergency Radio Corps, Police, Army Department and the South Canterbury Catchment Board took part in a search for a “missing aircraft.” The Timaru police tonight described the operation as “smoothrunning and well co-ordinated.” The “wreckage” was found by one search group after two hours in the field, and the news was then flashed back to the Army's radio base station, relayed through the Catchment Board’s network, and passed on to the police in Timaru. The searchers worked over rugged country, mainly on steep tussock and bush clad hills. An aircraft flew over the scene of operations and reported progress of the ground parties.
