Port Improvements For Western Samoa
Improvements are planned for Western Samoan port and loading facilities for overseas shipping. Preliminary investigations by a British firm of civil engineers are now almost complete. The South Pacific Commission’s newsletter reports that the improvements will include, at the main port, Apia, on Upolu Island, a new 1200 ft deepwater wharf, and a 400 ft breakwater to protect the harbour from heavy swells caused by north and northwesterly winds.
It is also hoped to develop the small harbours of Assau and Salelologa, on the island of Savai’i.
