Parental Control Of Adolescents
Sir, —After a recent ball in Timaru the public complained of the excessive noise made by the young people in the streets until 5 a.m. One dancer said, “What a fuss; surely we can make a bit of noise occasionally.’’ Her mother laughingly agreed. “It only happens once a year.” No thought was given to elderly or sick folk who may have drifted into their first beneficial sleep. Ibis mother does not cross her teen-age children or impose a time limit for their return home because “Mary does it; why shouldn’t we?’’ They might dislike her. Had she taught them respect for age instead of trying so hard to be young with them to their detriment, they could still have had their fun, but quietly. Their abominable rudeness to her springs from lack of respect. Young people need firm, mature guidance, not feeble acquiescence in inconsiderate playfulness. Miss Crosher is right Today’s parents are afraid of their children.— Yours, etc., TEACH THEM THOUGHTFULNESS. May 15, 1960.
