AFRICANS’ VICTIM
Woman Dies Of Burns
NDOLA (Northern Rhodesia), May 16. Mrs Lilian Burton, who was severely burned when Africans set fire to her car near Ndola last week, died early this morning.
Mrs Burton was burned over 70 per cent of her body when Africans threw petrol into her car and set Are to it after stoning it Earlier, the London “Daily Mail” said Government officials and security men were keeping in constant touch with the hospital in Ndola where doctors were fighting to save the life of Londonborn Mrs Burton, who was 39. They feared that her death would touch off a new wave of violence in the copper-belt of Northern Rhodesia, which the Queen Mother is due to visit. Already the Europeans in Ndola —a tough cross-section of the Commonwealth including manv Australians, were seething with fury about the attack on Mrs Burton and two of her daughters. Government officials were gravely concerned that there would be further bloodshed with less than a week to go before the Queen Mother's visit. The Queen Mother today will attend an indaba (gathering) of African chiefs from all over Southern Rhodesia at the start of her second week in the Rhodesian Federation.
The Queen Mother will latefly to Salisbury, the Federal Capital, where she arrived last Wednesday for her three-week i tour. I
