(Rec. 1.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, May 16 The United States Defence Department early today completed a surprise combat readiness alert for all American military commands throughout the world. Mystery surrounded the exercise, which a Defence Department spokesman called a "communications readiness alert” which was not supposed to attract public attention. Word of the alert, however, spread widely and caused some eases of jitters among the civilian population.
