‘PUNTERS’ DAY’ AT RANDWICK
Favourites Win Seven Races
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) „ , „ Sydney, May 15 Polo Prince may start in the Doomben Cup in July following his good win in the James Barnes Plate over 10 furlongs at Randwick yesterday. Polo Prince had to be hard ridden to stall off a very solid run by Compass, which he beat by a short head. The New Zealand-bred Tranquilette finished third.
The pace, which was fairly fast early, was eased along the" back stretch, where Kerrydale led Polo Prince. Morning Gleam. Tranquilette, Man of Iron, Caybros and □elsound.
Half a furlong from the winning post Compass had a good chance of reaching Polo Prince, but over the last bit it was Compass which gave in. and Polo Prince hung on gamely to his narrow lead. Tranquilette seemed in trouble in the middle stages when the pace was suddenly put on. She ran very honestly , over the last two furlongs and did really well to gain third place. The trainer. Jack Ryan, again outwitted bookmakers when the unfashionable jockey, W. Toohey won the Three and Four-year-old Handicap (seven furlongs) on Surabey. Surabey started at 11/4, although many experts considered the finy would be close to odds-on. She has now won nine of her last 10 starts.
Bookmakers gambled against Surabey because Toohey had not ridden a winner in Sydney for a long time. Surabey defeated the heavilybacked Little Loveli (3/1) by threequarters of a length. The New Zealand-owned Girvan (7/1) was an impressive third, a length and three-quarters away. Exemption completed a punters' day by winning the Welter Handicap, over one mile. Exemption was the sixth favourite to win in the seven-race programme. Beau Tirage (2/1 on), which finished second to Wire Service in the Two-year-old Handicap, was the only unsuccessful favourite of the day.
The winning favourites were Princess Delville (11/8) Surabey (11/4), Polo Prince (2/1), Fine and Dandy (3/1 on) Black Hawk (6/4 on), and Exemption (5/2). Exemption, in a head and head battle over the last 50 yards, beat Manrego by a short head. Edspell was three lengths away third. Results:—
