Essex Batsmen Fail Against South African Attack

„ LONDON. May 14. Extra police were posted outside the cricket ground at Ilford today when the South African team met Essex.
Soon after the match began three men, one coloured, paraded outside the ground with placards saying: “Apartheid Isn’t Cricket." They distributed leaflets, but there were no demonstrations. T. L. Goddard won the toss for the South Africans and put Essex in to bat. His decision was soon justified, for it took only 14 balls to send back the county’s first three batsmen for four runs. The fast bowler, N. Adcock, had L. A. Savlll caught at the wicket with his second delivery. B. Taylor then cracked a four, but G. Gritfin made the last ball of his first over jump and had G. J. Smith caught by McLean. A couple of balls later Taylor was out trying to hook Adcock. Later H. J. Tayfleld came on and soon had the middle-order men struggling. Adcock came back after lunch and constantly beat the bat.
The ninth wicket stand between W. T. Greensmith and L. H. R. Ralph put on 33, the best partnership of the innings. Ralph opened his shoulders to the tempting spinners of Tayfleld and clouted two fours in one over. The tall South African soon broke the partnership, however, when he had Greensmith caught when going for a big hit. Two balls later he trapped T. Kent leg-before and Essex was all out for 98 in just under two hours and a half. The South Africans opened their Innings briskly, taking six runs oft the first over by T. E. Bailey. B. R. Knight let fly two bouncers in his first over to C. A. R. Duckworth, but the South African opener forced one ball away to the square leg boundary.
Although the pitch had lost much of its earlier liveliness, Bailey gave Essex its first wicket when he had Duckworth taken behind the wicket off a ball that lifted with the South African score at 21.
Goddard batted on solidly, and he and S. O'Linn set up the 50 in even time Bailey trapped Goddard legbefore with the score at 57. The South African captain had made 28. Bailey soon had another lbw victim tn R. A. McLean, who, although ne hooked the first ball he received for 4. never looked comfortable, and had earlier almost played a ball from the Essex bowler on to his stumps. Shortly after tea, South Africa gained a first innings lead but not before Bailey had yet another lbw, decision, this time against O*Ltnn, who walked - across in front of his wicket without offering a stroke. Not long afterwards, C. Wesley was run out by a fine throw from the Essex captain. D. J. Insole. Scores:
