Competitions Festival Was Financial Success

Financially the Christchurch Competitions Society's 1960 festival had been a success, said the society’s president (Mr C. H. Plimmer) .in the St. James’ Theatre on Saturday evening. Mr Plimmer was speaking to the very large audience, made up in the main of parents, that attended the final demonstration concert of the day.

“Tonight it is wonderful to see you all. The size of this crowd is in itself an endorsement of the society's function and the fine work of the many talented youngsters who enter these annual competitions,” said Mr Plimmer. Presenting some of the cups and trophies, the patron (Mr H. Cordery) said that the growing number of trophies (71 of them), most of which were presented bjt various firms in the city, was a fine indication of the esteem the society was held in by the community.

During the two concerts, each of which ran non-stop for almost three hours, well balanced programmes presented the cream of 1000 or so contestants who had worked hard during the week. Altogether at the two shows 77 acts were presented. Compered by Mr J. Johnson, the two concerts were very well received with each act being enthusiastically applauded. The bulk of the afternoon concert’s audience was made up of hundreds of children. Against the drab curtains on stage the costumes and dresses worn by most performers were most colourful and gay, thanks to the hard work of sewing, pressing and designing of many mothers.
