The golden anniversary White
-House conference on Children and Youth ended in Washington recently. President Eisenhower invited Mr F. J. Potter, general secretary of Dr. Barn ar do's Homes to attend, along with another representative from Great Britain. The conference was attended by 7000 delegates from ail parts of the world.
These conferences, started by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1909. are held once in a decade They cover every topic concerning children and youth generally. The aim of the conference is for a better understanding of the problems and for free discussion on these, with a view to finding possible solutions. Though he may not know it President Eisenhower was responsible for a useful contribution of £5 Is 3d reaching Dr. Barnardo's Homes shortly after his visit to Scotland last year. The resourcefulness and ingenuity of a nine-year-old Barnardo helper. Wilma Johnston of the Ba mar do Helpers' League made this possible
While the President was on holiday at Culzean Castle he signed Wilma's autograph album at the request of the caretaker of the castle, a friend of Wilma's parents. Delighted to have achieved her object, she set out to show it to her school friends, neighbours and friends, inviting donations to see the President’s signature.
