Shooting Accidents

Sir,—We all have cause to reflect on the use and possession of lethal weapons by young folk. For years, your correspondent, horrified by the number of shooting accidents in this country, has campaigned, by every possible means, for a more realistic approach to the matter; but apparently with a discouraging lack of success. There seems to be a prevalent opinion that young New Zealanders are less prone to irresponsible actions, fraught perhaps with fatal results, than their contemporaries elsewhere; so that adult supervision, let alone admonition. is superfluous. So long as this attitude of mind persists, so long will recklessness and ignorance continue to take their toll of human life.—Yours, etc., SAFETY CATCH. April 29, 1960.
