RACING MARLBOROUGH CUP TO VALARIS

Compensate Wins Well In Sprint

(From Out Own Reporter) BLENHEIM, May 1. Valaris gained his fourth win for the season and his most important to date in the Marlborough Cup, the main race and first leg of the T.A.B. double on the first day of the Marlborough Racing Club’s autumn meeting at Blenheim yesterday. Valaris’s only previous success in open company had been the City Handicap at Invercargill last November but he had compiled a useful record of minor placings which included seconds in both the Dunedin and Invercargill Gold Cups. Meantime, sound runs in both the Great Autumn and Sockburn Handicaps at the C.J.C. autumn meeting brought Valaris into high favour for the Marlborough Cup in which he was the first choice with win, place, and doubles betters.

Valaris. which carries the colours of Dr. T. Jenkins, of Dunedin, gave his Oamaru trainer, J. C. Hobbs, his second successive training success in the race. Pilot Light had won the Marlborough Centennial Cup for the stable last November.

It was a highly successful dav for Hobbs, who also saddled up Comnensate to win the Seymour Handicap, the second leg of the main double, for Mr V. A. Voyce. of Kurow.

The Valaris-Compensate combination returned a double dividend of £9 18s 6d for £l. This was shared by the holders of 8160 5s tickets, of which 627 were held on the course. The on-course double, which was on the Novice Stakes and the Seddon Hack Handicap, was won by King of Kings and Jack Ashore. Their dividend for £1 was £45 4s 6d.

The meeting was held in fine weather and there was a good attendance. The track was firm and fast. On-course investments amounted tn including £3*>sB on the doubles, compared with £25 021 10s on the first day la't year.

Riverwood drifted to the rear from the start in the Marlboroueh Cup and Chattering was wst ahead of him when the field settled down. The top-weicht. Fair King, lost a little ground after starting from the outside at the barrier.

Parachute. King Lvn and Kirklea ran in line in the lead until they entered the straight the first time, when Kirklea worked past Parachute.

King Lyn and Kirklea ran in line in the lead until they entered the straight the first time Kirklea worked into a clear lead passing the stands with a mile to go. Parachute was eased into the trail behind her and Valaris was three wide alongside Whiohau and Chattering, which had moved up smartly. Kirklea opened up a gap of three lengths on Parachute as they left l the straight and Gaytana was next on the outside of King Lyn. Valaris raced alone in fourth place ahead of Fair King and Chattering together Whiohau. Gay Tommy and Riverwood were almost abreast at the rear. Kirklea was starting to feel the strain at the half-mile and N. Eastwood took Valaris up to her as they started the home turn. Gaytana also made a sharp run to be three wide in the lead and King Lyn was second on his own ahead of Parachute and Fair King-

Gaytana worked Into a short lead as they straightened for the run home, but Valaris had ranged alongside her again at the furlong. Fair King was forced four wide when King Lyn worked up the challenge on the outside of Valaris.

N. Eastwood kicked Valaris into a clear lead in a stride or two and although King Lyn kept up a strong run the best he could do was second, a length back. Fair King battled into third a length behind King Lyn and Gay Tommy was a fast finisher from the rear for fourth, two lengths behind him.

Whjohau made ground for a close fifth. He beat the tiring Gaytana, then came Parachute. Riverwood and the very tired Kirklea.

Vigorously Ridden • Compensate responded gamely to one of C. McDonald’s most vigorous rides to gain • much deserved but hard-earned victory in the Seymour Handicap, for which he was a pronounced favourite. Compensate was not one of the smart beginners but a sharp run carried him up to the third line alongside Pilot Light and on the inner of Zenella at the half-mile. Royal Leigh had been the pacemaker from the start and Gay Sailor, on the outer, shaded Ocean Melody for second. Gay Sailor joined Royal Leigh in the lead a furlong later and Compensate raced three wide alongside them to the straight. Zenella was four wide but slightly behind the co-leaders there and Ocean Melody and Pilot Licht were in behind. Royal Leigh and Gay Sailor came to the end of their runs at the furlong, where Compensate bounded clear. It appeared that he would be in for a comfortable win but closer to the end he had to battle hard under top-weight of 9-1 to beat Zenella by half a length. , Ocean Melody fought on well for third, a nose from Zenella. and Beau Revere came from second last at the half-mile for fourth, a length and a half back. Pilot Light was almost in line with him and shaded Gay Sailor for fifth. . Then came Cornflake. Royal Leigh and Uproar. Results- \
