TATTERSALLS MEETING
Open Betting On Main Race (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY April 29. In the feature race at Randwick tomorrow, the City Tattersails Autumn Handicap, bookmakers cannot separate the chances and in an open betting race have the last start winners Jack’s Count and Polo Prince equal favourites. The response to the City Tattersalls Club’s meeting tomorrow is the best it has received for some years, both for class and numbers. With the exception of the two-year-old handicap, for which Beau Tirage is the shortest priced favourite of the day, betting in the other six races takes in a wide range of fancies. The Autumn Handicap particularly should provide a keen finish, for although Jack’s Count and Polo Prince share favouritism, four others, Compass, Globous, Seahound and North Row, were tonight under double figure quotes and have the form to justify their prominence in the market. Jack’s Count will be ridden 15y Athol Mulley and Polo Prince by Bernie Howlett, who rode them at their last-start wins. Jack’s Count’s form may determine whether he will fulfil his engagement in the Wagga Gold Cup, to be run on ’fay 13 over a similar distance.
Of the 12 runners, Jack’s Count is the only one with an immediate -country cup engagement. His win at Warwick Farm last week was over a furlong further than tomorrow’s race and Jack’s Count has seldom shown better form. But while he may be expected to run soundly, Polo Prince, younger, more susceptible to improvement and in receipt of 91b, might shade him in the finish.
The second favourite is North Row. an English-bred gelding, which Polo Prince beat at Randwick at their last meeting.
