Independent Togoland
(N.Z Pres, Association —Copvriaht) LOME (Togoland), April 27. Togoland, a 21.600 square mile West African territory, attained independence as the continent’s smallest State at midnight after three-quarters of a century of imperial rule. Doyen of the guests is 86-year-old Duke Adolf von Mecklenburg, who was Governor of the German colony of Togo when it surrendered to British and French troops in 1914. Togoland has been administered by France since the end of World War I, first under a League of Nations mandate and then a United Nations trusteeship.
