Massey College Recommended (From Out Own Reporter) WELLINGTON. April 29 The Senate of the University of New Zealand last February adopted a report recommending Massey College as the most suitable location for a veterinary school The report was adopted because the Senate believed that informed opinion was that veterinary teaching was more closely allied with agriculture than with medicine. For that reason it saw no point in allying the veterinary college with the Otago University Medical School by building the college at Taieri.
But a factor which could weigh heavily with the Government is that a college at Taieri would be considerably cheaper than one at Massey At Taieri, buildings on the old R.N Z A.F station are available, the Invermay experimental station, the hydatids research station and a diagnostic station are nearby and the facilities of the Medical School are close at hand At Massey as at Lincoln, new buildings would be required, although all the advantages of close proximity to a full agricultural college are present.
In 1952 the Senate committee on veterinary education estimated that the capital cost of a new college would be £250.000. and annual costs would be £50.000 A minority report, however, considered that the capital cost would be nearer £500.000. with annual costs of £BO.OOO.
