RAILWAY LEVEL CROSSINGS

More Safety Devices Urged

The New Zealand Railways Department should provide more safety devices for motorists at railway level crossings. This was the basis of a resolution passed at a meeting of the Automobile Association, Canterbury, last evening. The resolution stated: “That the association request the South Island Motor Union to urge upon the New Zealand Railways the need to make more adequate protection available at railway level crossings.” Speaking to the motion Mr A. S. Crew said: “The onus always been on the motorist, but this does not allow for any human error.” He mentioned the recent tragedy at the Harewood road crossing and two other level crossing accidents in the Nortn Island. “In each of these accidents,” he said, “young people were killed.”
