Stablemates May Win Double At Forbury

The Templeton slablemates, Smokeaway and Couthie, might be the successful doubles combination on the first day of the Forbury Park Trotting Club's winter meeting tomorrow. The double will be run on the Winter and Beach Handicaps.

Smokeaway is one of the strongest form runners in the first leg. He raced with marked consistency at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Easter meetings at Addington earlier this month when his record from three starts was a win and two thirds.

It was only extreme gameness which gave Smokeaway a nose victory over Responsive in the President’s Handicap on the second day of the meeting. However, the value of that run was confirmed on the final day when Responsive gained a decisive win over 11 others in the Members’ Handicap.

Smokeaway was not a rival of Responsive on the concluding day. He contested the Autumn Handicap, but could not match either Waitaki Child or Direct Rhythm over the final furlong. However, he kept up a determined run to dead-heat for third with Great Dillon, slightly more than a length from the winner. That race was the third which Great Dillon had contested at the meeting and the second in which he had paid a dividend. On the first day he had followed Dame Sybil, at the first of her two winning runs at the meeting, and Harlequin Parade home in the Rothschild Handicap. Addington form also makes Frown, a minor place-getter in each of his two races over sprint distances, and Johnny Guitar, which followed Spring Chat and Frown home in the Electric Handicap on the second day, the most solid prospects of the ot er runners off the front mark. Backmarkers’ Chances The handicapped horses, ~nrl there are seven of them, will all start from the 12-yard mark. Spring Chat and Finestra. which was also a winner at Addington, will probably be the most solidly-backed runners in this section, but one of Zany's best runs could also place victory within her reach Her last race was the Dunedin Cup over 13 furlongs at Forbury Park in January Her second to Patchwork, which was then at the top of her form, was highly encouraging. Couthie regained something like her best form on the concluding day of ’he Easter meeting when she contested the Wilkin and Members’ Handicaps and finished third in both races. In the latter event, which was over two miles, she tried to slip the field three furlongs out. but could not cope with the challenge of Responsive or Mulgrove over the final furlong. A comparable run over half a mile less should give her a well-earned wL in the Beach Handicap. The recent form background of the majority of her 10 rivals off the limit -is not highly encouraging, but Queen Ngaio and Elope would only need to racf up to their best efforts at Addington to make Couthie work hard for victory. The best of the others off the front could be Gay Baron or

Vanity Scott, which has invariably raced well at Forbury Park. Satyr, the lone runner off 12 yards, made little impression in any of his three races at the Easter meeting at Addington but a performance in keeping with his successful run in the McCloy Memorial Handicap at Methven last month would make him a definite prospect. However, Satyr is also engaged in the first leg of the double in which he will be bracketed with Finestra if that race is chosen as his mission. Acceptances;—
