The Minister of Education (Mr Skoglund) spent the day in Christchurch yesterday. His first official appointment was at the Canterbury Museum where he inspected the new planatarium and the additions to the museum. Later he conferred with the ViceChancellor of the University of Canterbury (Dr. F. J. Llewellyn) In the afternoon he opened Kirkwood Intermediate School and visited the Sir John McKenzie Memorial Children's Library in Upper Riccarton. He returned to Wellington by steamer express last evening.

Mr W. R. Campbell was reelected unopposed as chairman of the Christchurch Fire Board at the board’s annual meeting.

The Director of the Wheat Research Institute (Mr E. W. Hullett) will visit Sydney in May for the opening of the new buildings of the Bread Research Institute of Australia. During his visit Mr Hullett will also investigate new advances in wheat and flour research.

Mr R. A. Irvine, presentation officer and announcer in charge at Station 2ZA, Palmerston North, has been chosen as the New Zealand Broadcasting Service’s commentator to accompany the Nsw Zealand Rugby team on its tour of South Africa.—(P.A.)

Mr D. J. Robinson, headmaster of the Roseneath Primary School since 1956. has been appointed inspector of island schools in the island education branch of the Department of Education.— (P.A.) The Shirley Boys’ High School Board of Governors last evening re-elected Mr George Burns chair” man and Mrs L. R. Hartley as deputy-chairman.

Mr C. J. Pugsley, manager for New Zealand of the Southern Cross Assurance Company. Ltd., for the last 25 years, will retire next month after more than 40 years’ experience in the life insurance business- in most of the Australian States as well as New Zealand. ,
