SOUTH AFRICA TOUR
Bus Drivers’ Protest
Members of the Public Passenger Transport Union in Christchurch believed the proposed tour of South Africa by a New Zealand Rugby team should be postponed until the South African Government’s apartheid policy is revoked.
”We are of the opinion that the position has deteriorated since our union protested over the noninclusion of Maoris in the team,” says a statement issued by the Christchurch branch. “While it may be argued by some that the policy of the New Zealand Rugby Union is a domestic matter, we feel that the policy of any body, club or party, whether political or not which tends to divide the people of a country does then become a political matter, and the concern of all thinking people.” "We therefore appeal to the Rugby Union to postpone this tour pending more favourable conditions when it would be possible to send a truly representative team irrespective of colour or creed.”
