Transistor Radios

Sir,—On page 17 of "The Press ’ on April 9, Mr R. M. Naysmith, of the CanterburyWestland branch of the New Zealand Retailers’ Federation is concerned at the effect on retailers of the possible sale of smuggled radios in New Zealand. Also he said some sets cannot be serviced by the trade. I am fully convinced that some competition should be allowed. I went into a radio shop to inquire the price of a displayed portable set. I was astounded with an answer of nearly £3O, when a better looking set could be imported, including 100 per cent duty, for about half that amount. I suggest Mr Naysmith should read the article headed, ’’Japanese Sets Spur Industry” on page 12.—Yours etc., TOO MUCH PROTECTION April 11, 1960.
