CHRISTCHURCH CLUB
P Class Race And Barton Cup Light winds dictated the trend of racing at the Christchurch Yacht Club on Saturday. During the morning a handicap race was held for the P class, with ten starters from Christchurch, Mount . Pleasant and Stewart’s Gully clubs. The course was two rounds, windward and leeward. Because of failing winds only one boat finished— Revenge (W. Farnham). In the afternoon, the Barton Cup for Finn class yachts was sailed. From a fleet of eight, D. Borrell. in Hyphen, sailed well in the light wind to come home first in front of W. Beere, in Elfin. On the first beat to windward,' the fleet began to spread out with Finora, Hyphen, Fintahi and Elfin well to the fore. The position remained much the same until almost the finish when Elfin struck a mudbank and allowed Hyphen to sail home the winner. While the Barton Cup was being sailed the other club boats held a combined race. Because of the light wind this became a field day for the R class boats. On the beats to windward the racing dinghies carved their, way through the fleet of 12 starters. The course was shortened by one round as the time limit had almost expired towards the end of the race. H. Hobden, in Wizard (R class), sailing off a good handicap, led the fleet home, followed by G. Mander in Frenzy. ’ The following results are subject to confirmation, for two protests were lodged at the end of the race:— Wizard, R class (H. Hobden) 1; Frenzy, R class (G. Mander) 2; Fresco. R class (B. Treleaven), 3.
