CHOLMONDELEY HOME

“Pathetic” List Of Subscribers The list of subscribers to the Cholmondeley Memorial Children’s Home last • year was described as pathetic by the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. H. P. Smith) when he presided at the annual meeting at the home on Saturday afternoon. Referring to the list printed with the annual report. Cr. Smith said: “The thing that strikes me is that you can get the whole membership on two pages. This is what I would call a pathetic little list 6f subscribers.” He suggested that an appeal should be made for funds within various groups such as accountants, lawyers, and doctors. The membership fee was only 10s a year, he said, and that represented 2Jd a week, a sum could afford. There was an excess of exnenditure over income amounting to £1668 last year, and Cr Smith said that what was required was not so much the enthusiastic support of people, but their cheques. It was always best to deal in plain cold facts, he continued, and the position was that at the present rate of progress the institution would close down insolvent. “When you are appealing for kiddies you cannot be too blunt.” he concluded. Mr E. A. .Adams said he considered that the greatest asset of Cholmondeley Home was not shown on the balance-sheet. It was the children themselves, and he did not think the home would close. “I am quite sure we will get out of this all right,” he said. The president (Mr C. L. Paterson) said that it had been apparent that the public was unaware of the new phase In the work of the home-caring for children in the event of domestic crises in a home, or at a time when one of the parents had to go to hospital. It was for this reason that a brochure on the home had been produced last year, and the brochure had brought'.a response. Apart from the subsidy of 10s for each child the home was independent of church or Government assistance, and he considered that this was a good thing, because the home had a homely atmosphere. Mr Paterson added that before the meeting he had been handed two cheques which totalled £l2O. Election of Officers Officers elected were:— President, Mr C. L. Paterson; vice-presidents, Miss P. Hollander, and Messrs G. F. Maples and J. Durie; committee, Mesdames C. Hearn, J. K. Austad and A. G. Flower, Misses E. Neville add M. Best, Messrs E. A. Adams, G. W. Walker, A. Tozer and O. Lulham (Junior Chamber of Commerce), Dr. P. C. S. Unwin and Dr. P. A. M. Heath; secretary, Mrs E. Blackburn: treasurer. Mr J. B. Durie; honorary solicitor, Mr R. J. Loughnan; honorary auditors. Messrs Nicholls, North, and Nicholls.
