UNIVERSITY SALARIES

Government Decision Welcomed The Government’s decision to put into effect the first part of the salaries recommendations in the Parry report, is welcomed by the New Zealand Post-Primary Teachers’ Association, according to the president (Mr W. R Edwards) of Waiuku.

In a supplied statement, Mr Edwards said that within its ranks, the association had the largest single professional group of candidates in New Zealand universities.

“Its members prepare, in association with their colleagues in New Zealand’s private schools, the great bulk of the young oeople going up to the universities; the continued efficient working of our post-primary schools is dependent upon the existence of an efficient university system, since our future teachers go there to secure their degrees," he said.

“Some university students are already suffering because of lack of staff and facilities. Many classes are over-crowded: some classes and tutorials have been cut out; teaching has been restricted, and students excluded from classes. Many of these students were preparing themselves for teaching science. Their exclusion from science classes means that fewer qualified teachers in these subjects will be available, with consequential effects on pupils wishing to prepare for university study. "Our interest in the practical benefits that will flow from the Cabinet’s decision is thus very ••eal and we hope that the Prime Minister and his colleagues will deal realistically and swiftly with the other salary recommendations of the report, and especially with those relating td provision of finance for buildings and equipment. The recognition of special skills and qualifications is a matter vital to the welfare of ‘he whole New Zealand community. It is gratifying to see that he truth of this proposition has eceived a real and substantial ecognition by the Government," •aid Mr Edwards.
