Burgess Trophy ' To J. Nicholson The Christchurch Yacht Club held an open combined race tor the Burgess Trophy on Saturday. The race w'as sailed in a - moderate southerly breeze over a windward and leeward course. The fleet of 14 was set off with a Mark Foy start and it was in the second lap that J. Nicholson in his new R-class Overture, took the lead. About three-quarters of a mile from home the R-class began to overtake the rest of the fleet. H. Hobden in Wizard finished second Just in front of Elfin (W. Beere), after a close tussle. Back in his R-class Franzy, G, Mander sailed well off scratch to come home fifth. ' Results.— Overture (R-class), J. Nicholson, 7min, 1; Wizard (R-class), 11. Hobden, 9min, 2; Elfin (Finn), W. Beere, Bmin, 3. Yesterday a combined race was held over a triangular windward and leeward course. The race was notable for the closeness of all boats throughout the race. Off a Mark Foy start the Takapunas led the field for' a great deal of the race only to be overcome by a strong tide at Fisherman's Point. The, R-class yachts were hard pressed to gain places although G. Mander in Frenzy took first place after starting off scratch. He was closely pursued by Ji Oliver in Tippin and P. Braithwaite in Invicta. The majority of the fleet finished within smln of the first boat which does credit to the handicappers. Results:— Frenzy, G. Mander (R-class), scr., 1; Tippin, J. Oliver (Junior Cherub), ISmin, 2; Invicta, P. Braithwaite (Junior Cherub). 15min, 3. Tauranga Race (Penn Trophy, final race).— Sparky (B. de THier), Ihr Imin lOsec. 1; Bemadine (L. McGrath), Ihr Imin llsec, 2; Petite (P. Skelton), Ihr 2min 30sec, 3. Final points: Sparky 252.58, Bernadine 195, Petite 172.77. Capet (N. England) 157.72.
